Uprating a motorhome allows you to raise your vehicle’s laden weight, enabling you to carry more luggage, accessories or equipment.
What exactly does ‘uprating’ mean in the context of a Camper Van or motorhome?
Uprating means that the vehicle’s maximum permissible laden weight or maximum permissible axle load is increased. It is checked whenever you need a heavier payload in your vehicle.
Common reasons for uprating:
You need more payload in your vehicle.
You have, or would like to perform a retrofit to add additional equipment and need a higher payload to do so.
Please note that uprating will increase the maximum authorised laden weight of your motorhome.Depending on the new laden weight, a different category of driving licence may be required.
Important information regarding increasing a vehicle’s load capacity
Please note:
- Uprating is only possible if the vehicle is technically suitable for this. When a request is made regarding possible uprating, it is therefore always necessary to assess on a case-by-case basis whether the vehicle meets the technical requirements for this.
- In some cases, technical modifications and approval are required. This inspection must be carried out by an inspection body such as Dekra, TÜV, GTÜ (in Germany) etc. for each individual vehicle.
- The change must be recorded in the vehicle documents; you must have this entered by the relevant vehicle registration authority.
